Robert J. (Sonny) Kaufman's Obituary
North Charleston
Entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, Robert John (Sonny) Kaufman, Jr., lost his battle to cancer. The beloved husband of Edith Metts Kaufman, Sonny and Edith celebrated 55 years of marriage on August 2. He was born on March 11, 1941, in Charleston, to the late Robert J. and Dorothy H. Kaufman. His proudest accomplishment in life was that of being a devoted husband and proud father of two beloved sons, Robert J. Kaufman, III, (Kay) of San Antonia, TX, and Kevin W. Kaufman of North Charleston. His family was his life and he will be forever loved.
A veteran of Vietnam and Desert Storm, Sonny entered the United States Air Force upon graduation from Chicora High School (59). He served ten years active duty and completed his military service in the U.S. Air force Reserves, retiring in 1997. In 2002 he also retired from the Department of Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS). Department of Defense, as an accounting technician.
In addition to his wife and two sons, Mr. Kaufman is survived by four grandchildren; Brett Robert Kaufman of Houston, TX; Kristen Kaufman Raaberg (Greg) of San Antonio, TX; Blair Kaufman Still (Matt) of Goose Creek; and Erica Kaufman, North Charleston; and two great-grandsons, Timothy Austin and Emmett Nash Raaberg. He is also predeceased by his parents and sister Eleanor Kaufman Evans.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 14, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 4900 Dorchester Rd., North Charleston, SC, 29418. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 15, at Cokesbury United Methodist Church and officiated by Pastor Brad Gray and Chaplain Jay Glasgow, followed by burial services at 1:00 p.m. in the Metts Cemetery in Branchville.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude and thanks for the wonderful care and kindness given by the Roper Hospice team: John Vorlick, Chaplain Glasgow, and Sarah Varner. Special thanks are also extended to Pastor Megan Gray and the Cokebury United Methodist Church family.
