Ross J Horton's Obituary
Branchville
Mr. Ross J. Horton, 85 years of age, died Friday, July 6, 2012. Mr. Horton was born in Bethune, SC, a son of the late Wade C. Horton and Maggie Jones Horton. He was retired from the Branchville Public School after many years of teaching, coaching, and leading as principal. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman. A champion golfer, he won many awards, including four time SCGA Senior Men's Championship, and one time Men's Senior CGA Championship. He graduated from Newberry College after receiving a baseball scholarship for four years, and earned his master's degree from Western Carolina University. Horton Athletic Field, in Branchville, was named in his honor. He was a member of the Branchville Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of the community.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 9, 2012, at 11:00 A.M., at Branchville Baptist Church, with Rev. Steve Mims officiating; the casket will be placed in the church one hour before services.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Nira "Pete" Horton of Branchville, one son, Steve Horton (Julie) of Moncks Corner, two grandchildren, Maggie and Thomas Horton, two brothers, Grady Horton of Bethune and John Horton of Camden, one sister, Grace Holley of Camden, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday, from 6 to 8 P.M., at Ott Funeral Home in Branchville; at other times, friends may call at the residence. Memorials can be made to Branchville Baptist Church, 691 Ott St., Branchville, SC, 29432.
