Branchville
Mrs. Villa D. Thompson, 85 years of age, died Thursday, February 26, 2015. Mrs. Thompson was born in Branchville, a daughter of the late Horace Cuthbert Dempsey Sr. and Alverda Folk Dempsey. Mrs. Thompson has been a member of Prospect Southern Methodist Church since 1949, where she taught Sunday school and served as the church secretary for a number of years. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Branchville Order of Eastern Star. Past SC state president of Financial Women International. Past president of the Edisto Chapter FWI, and she was a member of the Secretaries Association. She retired from banking after working for more than 42 years, and was Vice President and Branch Manager of Farmers & Merchants in Branchville. Mrs. Thompson also served on the Orangeburg County Development Commission, Branchville Development Board, the Branchville Merchants Association, and the Branchville Medical Association.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 1, 2015, at 2:00 P.M., at Prospect Southern Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Bogstad, Rev. Jerry Thompson, and Rev. Bobby Ethridge officiating. Burial will be in Thompson Cemetery. Pallbearers are Billy Ethridge, Billy Beeks, Davis Dempsey, Matthew Summers, Brandon Berry, and Sammie Murray,
She is survived by one son, G. Atmar Thompson Jr. (Tracy), two daughters, Cindy T. Horton, and Valerie T. Funchess (Don), one sister, Melody D. Ethridge (Jackie), four grandchildren, Laura E. Thompson, Casie H. Reynolds (Jordan), Alex Funchess, and Jessie Funchess, one great- grandchild, Sarah Reynolds, and a number of nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Gerald A. Thompson Sr., and two brothers, James "Ben" Berry, and H.C. "Jack" Dempsey Jr.
The family will receive friends Saturday, from 5 to 7 PM, at Ott Funeral Home, in Branchville; at other times, friends may call at the residence. Memorials may be made to Prospect Southern Methodist Church, c/o Gayle Gaskins, 4483 Cattle Creek Rd., Branchville, SC, 29432. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to a special caregiver, Ms. Gloria Moye.
